Here we follow the restoration of a 64-65 column shift steering column. The process is basically the same for 1964-1967 columns although some parts differ slightly.

This column came in missing most of the parts so after we scrounged up the missing pieces, we stripped it down and sand blasted all the hard parts.

Once everything was painted and the shift tube assembly was greased we
were ready for assembly.

The shift tube just slides in secured by 3 bolts. The wires of the new turn signal
switch need to be inserted through the two upper collars before
assembly. The top section of the shift tube and the inside of the
shift collar get a good supply of grease and slide together.

The upper collar and turn signal switch are secured by 3 bolts, and the lower
plastic bearing sleeve slips in and is retained by a wire clip.

The shiftlever is pinned in place and the indicator is screwed on. A new
lower bearing is inserted and the center shaft is the last part
that is installed since it makes everything else easier to work on.
