Hi All,

I am about to send my car off for paint (1965 Chevelle). In getting it ready, I am removing all of the door seals, window felts, etc. I am struggling to get the wing window assemblies out of the door. When I go back together I will put in new wing window seals........I have gotten as far as figuring out that I need to remove the door glass inorder get enough movement of the wing window assembly rearward.

My problem... I can't get the window glass out if its mounting channel... does anyone have any tips for doing this. I am affraid I am going to break the glass or channel and can only think that there is a tech tip trick out there to help me.

Thanks,

Bob

You don't want to remove the glass mounting channel while it's still in the door. What you want to do is remove the rear glass run channel. You can do that by removing the two bolts in the door jamb that secure the run channel to the back of the door. After that you can lower the door glass all the way into the door and slide it back so you have enough wiggle room for the vent window assembly.

For that you have a bolt, a nut, & a screw in the front door jamb area, a nut near your inside door handle, and a screw just under the vent handle. Once the vent window is out, you can remove the door glass without removing it from it's mount channel if you have also removed the window felts first.

I'm going threw a similar task. I've already removed the wing windows, all the old rubber and getting ready to put the new seals in. I was told by a friend that I need to drill out the rivets at it's pivot point, remove the nut on the bottom of the glass inorder to re-install the seals properly. Also being I don't have a small rivet gun, replace the rivets with small machine screws. Does this sound accurate?

That is correct, drill out the rivet and remove the nut at the bottom. Pay attention to the order of the spring & washers before removal.

We recommend using the correct rivet for reassembly as it has a special shoulder for the glass to pivot on. It is not a pop rivet so you will not be using a gun to reinstall it. The factory had a tool, but for the average restorer it is simply a matter of a hammer and a punch to spread the rivet open and flatten it out.

They are available for $1 each.
